Eating seasonal produce is definitely the best way to eat food at it’s best. There are many advocates for a seasonal diet, and at Nuva we try to eat as many seasonal fruits and veggies. Each month we try to look a bit deeper at seasonal food and this month our seasonal stars are raspberries and beetroots!
Whilst raspberries are coming to the end of their natural season, they are still a great way to re-live those summer months. These wonderful berries actually come in a range of varieties and colours including purple, black and golden, as well as the usual pink-red variety. They are a fantastic source of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, manganese and dietary fibre. Small in size, they still pack a punch and are fantastic in everything from topping breakfast treats to a scrumptious snack.
Our other seasonal star beetroot is in peak season throughout October. With a slightly sweet, earthy flavour and incredible colour (yes we’re loving that pinky purple!) it really is an underrated veggie. This is another natural super star that comes in a wide range of colours (from golden hued to deepest purple and candy striped in between), with a variety of health benefits. Beetroots are rich in fibre and have long been used to help stimulate the liver’s detoxification processes – so it might be worth thinking of adding a little beetroot the morning after you’ve over indulged! Not only is it a fantastic remedy, but did you know that beetroot can be used to make a delicious chocolate cake?
Our seasonal stars are reminding us of lazy summer days and keeping us going with a bit of natural sweetness as we move to the colder months. What are you seasonal stars this month?
